pA few days ago, we a href=http://copying_isnt_theft asked musicians/a to do their own arrangements of Nina Paley's song emCopying Isn't Theft/em. The response has been great! folder_open iconCalling All Musicians: Can You Arrange This Song?

pOne of our upcoming projects is the a href=/minute_memes Minute Memes/a video series (we're hunting down funding for that and other things right nownbsp;mdash;nbsp;a href=/contact leads welcome/a). Nina Paley, award-winning animator of a href=http://sitasingstheblues.com Sita Sings the Blues/a, wanted her next work after Sita to be about copyright restrictions and censorship, and hit on the idea of emMinute Memes/em: short, viral videos that use visual storytelling to spread truly revolutionary ideas. You know, radical stuff, like the notion that people should be able to share music without asking permission, or that making a derivative work is an act of homage not destruction. The sorts of ideas you're not likely to hear from the a href=http://mpaa.org/ MPAA/a or the a href=http://riaa.com/ RIAA/a, who, of course, are busy making a href=http://www.copyrightalliance.org/content.php?key=videos their own videos/a to convince you that culture should be owned./p pThe first Minute Meme will be a video called a href=/minute_memes#meme-copying-is-not-theft Copying Isn't Theft/a. It's not ready yet, but Nina's written a song to go with it. Or at least the lyrics and the tunenbsp;mdash;nbsp;the rest of the arrangement comes from you. Musicians out there, what can you do with this?/p pcenter/center/p object width=507 height=285param name=allowfullscreen value=true /param name=allowscriptaccess value=always /param name=movie value=http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=3698663amp;server=vimeo.comamp;show_title=1amp;show_byline=1amp;show_portrait=0amp;color=999999amp;fullscreen=1autoplay=1 /embed src=http://vimeo.com/moogaloop.swf?clip_id=3698663amp;server=vimeo.comamp;show_title=1amp;show_byline=1amp;show_portrait=0amp;color=999999amp;fullscreen=1autoplay=false type=application/x-shockwave-flash allowfullscreen=true allowscriptaccess=always width=507 height=285 /embed/objectp/p pGo wild. Rearrange it, re-dub the vocals, do whatever you need to do. When you think you've got something good, post it somewhere and leave a comment here (or a href=/contactcontact us/a). If it's close enough to what Nina was aiming for, we may be able to use it in the Minute Memes./p pa href=http://questioncopyright.org/copying_isnt_theft target=_blankread more/a/p

folder_open iconAffordable HIV drugs meant for Nigeria, have been seized by Dutch authorities(for 6th time) because intellectual property rights matters more than those of dying humans

UNITAID, the drug purchase arm of the World Health Organization (WHO), reacted sharply on 4 March to Dutch authorities seizing HIV/AIDS medicines of Aurobindo Pharma Ltd meant for use in Nigeria.

The purchase by the Clinton Foundation through UNITAID was confiscated at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport on 12 November on grounds that it contained counterfeit goods and infringed intellectual property rights (IPRs). It is the sixth reported incident of an Indian drug firm’s exports being seized in transit in Europe for shipments meant for other markets.

Creator-Endorsed Mark (white on black)

(Note: an earlier version of this article appeared here. This version supersedes and replaces the earlier one: this is the official public release of the mark. We now provide definitive terms for its use, and Nina Paley, the designer of the new mark, has started using it in commerce for her film "Sita Sings The Blues".)

The Creator-Endorsed Mark is a logo that a distributor can use to indicate that they are distributing a work in a way that its creator endorses — typically, by sharing some of the profits with the creator. In a world where more and more creators are let their works circulate freely on the Internet, this gives a reliable way for redistributors to signal to their customers that they are supporting the artist.
